AI Search Marketing: The New Era of SEO
Consumer behavior online is shifting faster than most marketing strategies can adapt to, creating a new landscape for local business owners.
The Rise of Zero-Click Searches
Consumer behavior online is shifting faster than most marketing strategies can adapt, creating a totally new landscape for local business owners. According to Michael Nelson, Founder of Hourglass and President and CRO of Five Towers Media in Saratoga Springs, NY, traditional search engine dynamics have permanently changed.
For over two decades, local businesses relied on search engine clicks to drive traffic to their websites, but that era is coming to a close. Today, 68% of Google searches end without a single click out to an external site. Consumers are getting their answers directly on the search results page, forcing brands to completely rethink how they measure organic visibility and reach potential customers.
Rapid Changes in Consumer Behavior
This dramatic shift away from traditional search links is largely driven by the rapid growth of artificial intelligence tools. Recent data shows that 45% of consumers used AI to find a local business this year, representing a massive leap from just 6% previously. As Nelson points out, many businesses are simply falling behind these quick-moving habits and failing to adjust their strategy.
“Bottom line is, brands are not keeping up with what consumers are doing and where you’re going to show up,” Nelson explains.
Searchers are increasingly treating AI engines like Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini as personalized advisors, holding full conversations to research local services before ever visiting a website or making a phone call.
AI Summaries Eclipsing Map Listings
For local businesses accustomed to competing for top billing in local map listings, the search layout itself has rapidly evolved. Currently, over half of local search queries display an AI summary positioned directly above the map pack. These AI-generated overviews extract answers immediately, capturing consumer attention before users ever scroll down to standard map listings or Google Business Profiles
Instead of browsing multiple websites to compare options, searchers read these concise summaries and often navigate directly to a specific company based on the AI recommendation. This completely alters the traditional local discovery process and requires businesses to adapt their digital presence to feed these summaries.
The High Conversion Rate of AI Traffic
While total click volume from traditional search engines may be dropping, the quality of traffic coming through AI discovery is remarkably high and highly motivated. Nelson highlights a critical advantage for proactive companies that optimize properly:
“AI-referred visitors can be significantly more likely to convert than visitors from traditional channels, with Microsoft Clarity finding AI traffic converts at three times the rate of traffic from other channels.”
Because potential clients engage in detailed, conversational research with AI platforms prior to taking any action, they arrive at a company website fully informed and ready to make a buying decision. These pre-educated visitors complete contact forms, make phone calls, and purchase services far more efficiently than standard web searchers.
Optimizing for Context and Recency
To adapt to this new environment, local companies must maintain their website as an active source of truth rather than a static digital brochure. Sites must be regularly updated with fresh blogs, frequently asked questions, and technical schema markup so large language models can properly parse the information. Businesses also need to aggressively manage their Google Business Profile, focusing heavily on review recency rather than just total review volume.
Additionally, building local earned media and third-party mentions through organizations like the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce builds essential digital authority. Summarizing this strategic pivot, Nelson notes,
“It used to be content is king. I’m starting to think that maybe context is king.”
Consistent activity across all these channels ensures local businesses stay visible across modern search platforms.
What This Means for Your Business
This shift isn’t something local businesses can afford to sit out. At Five Towers Media, this is the foundation of how we approach SEO and GEO strategy for clients. That means publishing fresh, structured content that AI engines can actually parse, tightening up schema markup so a business shows up in those AI summaries, and keeping Google Business Profiles active with recent reviews — not just a high total count.
The businesses showing up in AI-driven searches today are the ones treating their websites as living resources, not static brochures. That’s increasingly where the opportunity is for companies willing to adapt early.
